Seniors Association of Oakvile (Halton)

Project Name: "Witness the Fitness with Seniors"
Project Name: "Witness the Fitness with Seniors"
Project Duration: March 2024 to March 2025 (1 year)
Project Objective: This project aims to promote social participation and inclusion of seniors by forming a walking and exercise club for seniors in our community.
-
Our senior volunteers and members are seeking a project that promotes active living to encourage healthy aging.
-
The organization has been requested by its senior membership to develop a new project that will support the healthy living of seniors through walking, stretching, and exercises. By supporting physical and mental strengthening through this project, seniors will have increased range mobility, improved resistance and coordination, socially connected with like-minded seniors, and combat obesity and health conditions.
-
A senior project coordinator will be tasked to work with our associations' senior executive team to deliver a monthly schedule of activities, including walking trail guides, scavenger hunts in shopping centres, and workout milestone challenges.
-
Project activities include facilitated group walks, trail walks, evening walks, morning workouts, indoor exercise and stretches, and social meets by walking to lunch sites, libraries, and community centres.
-
Our walking club will promote unity and hope to add more senior participants throughout the duration of this project as we will be wearing club shirts and hats, as advertisements for our project.
-
We will have monthly recognition awards for seniors who reach walking milestones (100,000 steps, 25 kms walked, etc) and have friendly competitions through a "step-tracker."
-
A senior volunteer will circulate a monthly newsletter and email to the group, to inform our senior group friends of upcoming walks and stay connected.
-
Seniors will arrange car-pooling for seniors to come out from their homes and improve their health.
-
Our senior walking club will benefit inactive seniors who were restrained due to the pandemic. Many seniors have hesitations and fear of leaving their homes, however we will work with these seniors one step at a time. Isolated and vulnerable seniors will find comfort in our club as we have a diverse group that speaks over 10 different languages. Senior populations are at risk to health related problems such as obesity, heart issues, diabetes, mental health, and other disabilities, however this project will encourage active, physical exercise and eating healthy as we will work with a professional trainer and provide the tools needed to balance fitness in everyone's busy lives.
-
The cost of gym memberships are unaffordable for our senior community and "Step-by-Step" walking project will provide free activities to seniors, by seniors.
-
This project will bring all seniors of our club and more out of their loneliness and mental health issues such as depression, as this will focus their minds on positive walking and networking with other like-minded seniors, supporting the NHSP's objectives on social participation and inclusion of seniors.
